“I watched others play and I was always attracted to drums. In church, which was my foundation, the drummer taught me little by little and then one day, he stopped coming. I became the drummer!

But it wasn’t until I started coming to our center that I started to get serious about playing.

"Our center’s programs have helped me with more than drumming. At first, when I started the summer intensive program and they told me I was going to learn drums and ballet!...I was not really happy. But then I realized that the whole experience has helped me to be more diverse in my music, because I had only known Gospel. I learned West African drumming and Jazz and many different styles and, all of a sudden, I was more than just a drummer — I was a diverse musician.

“Does Art change lives? Yes, sir. If someone sees me doing something positive, and they hear me play and see me carrying my sticks, it inspires others to want to learn something different in their lives, as well. Music changed my life, because it gave me a goal and discipline. I look forward to practicing every day and getting on the drum set. It’s a way to escape from stuff. If you’re having a bad day and you listen to a song, it can change your mood and effect your day, and maybe your life.

"I believe in putting God first, putting my work first. Just stand on top of my work and go after my dream. I don’t want to be selfish about it. I want to help everyone along as well. Everybody I meet now, I tell them about the Center.

Sometimes just being around these people that think and have a passion changes me. Sometimes I can learn just by being in the hallway and hearing someone use a word I have never heard before. They never make me feel bad or dumb about it. The just tell me what it means."
