BACK TO MENUstudent galleries:  monserrat a.: “being a multicultural artist”

“I have always liked to perform and being a visual artist, by day, gets very internal. It’s like you are living in a world in your head: even when you are showing and being critiqued, you are still in your own world.

I do like extroverted art forms to balance my self and to share energy with the outside world.

I like that I can come here and be supported by other kids my age that are all going through similar life situations, being artists, being multicultural, being misunderstood.

Being an artist changes lives. It has changed my life and all of the people around me that have to think out-of-the-box just to understand all the things I am doing. If we all worked as hard as artists do to perfect their art, then there wouldn’t be so many random people walking around looking to destroy and make things ugly. Some people need more positive examples in order to live positively, where as others are the initiators that spread positivity: you need both kinds of people.

If you grow up seeing liquor stores and drug dealers, your life is going to be an imitation of these things. If you grow up hearing good music and seeing people paint murals on the walls, you will reflect the creativity and you will probably have a higher sense of beauty, love, and respect for yourself and others around you.

“I have matured in many ways. I have grown in years, literally. I have taken on responsibilities as an assistant teacher that have forced me to think about my art from a different perspective. I can appreciate how hard it is for the teachers to give me lessons when I have had the chance to walk in their shoes. I also find that interacting with so many talented kids has challenged me and helped me mature.”
